Day 4 – A quickie.

May 15th, 2008

Wow. I just saw this post in our ‘drafts’ folder and realized it has never been published. Sure it would be better with pictures but you can find pics of the whole tour here. Enjoy this last write up of one incredible motorbike trip.

———————————-

When we arrived at St. Jean it was dry as we were further from the Pyrenees now. Hoping for a clear day we looked outside and witnessed it dark and……wet! Dark because it was still early but wet cause it was raining H-A-R-D! The night before we drew up two possible ride routes. Route A would take us back into the Pyrenees and along more steep mountain passes and spit us out with a short ride to San Sebastian. This would be another full day of riding and would only get our thumbs up only if it was sunny. Route B was a straight line to San Sebastian with the last 45 minutes or so being on an expressway. I was hoping for Route A and I think Stan was secretly hoping for rain as his cold had caught up to him and some reduced time on the bikes was what he needed.

In any case, we got rain…lots of it…and so, we booked it to San Sebastian. Aside from the expressway which sees my 650 matted at full tilt, the road out of St. Jean was nice. We were both really looking forward to San Sebastian as we had seen so many pictures of the fantastic coastline and heard great things about the food.

Disappointed we were not! Within 2 hours we had arrived in Donasti (San Sebastian in Basque) and were cruising around taking in the fantastic and famous La Concha Bay. We were too late for nice warm sun being late September but you can tell this place would be BUSY in the summer months as the beach goes on for miles.

We rode around for a while and then settled into a nice small hotel in the old quarter, unpacked our bags and visited tapas bar after tapas bar. The food in San Sebastian was incredible. Although we stuck to the tapas, San Sebastian boasts more Michelin star restaurants than any other location in Spain, which for its size is pretty impressive.
